2D Barcodes

What is a 2d Barcode?

A 2D barcode is the next step up in barcoding.

It allows you to store more information in a small printed symbol, that can be used for a veriety of purposes, but is usually used to store a URL for a mobile website.

How do you use a 2d Barcode?

Generally speaking, you have a 2D barcode reader on your mobile phone. You would run this reader application (usually downloadable for free).

The reader application will typically turn on the camera in the mobile phone, and you would be asked to take a picture of the barcode you want to use.

Once this is done, the reader application will show you the URL that is encoded in the barcode, you can then press a button to go to that URL using the browser on your mobile phone.

What does a 2D barcode look like?

How much data can be stored in a 2d barcode?

You can store up to about 2000 characters, but generally it's good to keep it down to about 100 or so. This is because the 2d barcode gets larger as more data is encoded in it.

Error Correction

2D barcodes can be created with up to about 30% redundancy, so that if a bit of the image is damaged, out of focus, or obscured, the barcode is still usable

What might a web page look like that you access from a 2d Barcode?

There are obviously limitless ways to set up a mobile web page, but key concepts to keep ion mind are;

  • Small! Screens on a mobile device are smaller than a regular computer
  • Minimal Navigation. Mobile devices are more for reading than interacting, keep it simple.
  • Not a direct copy of you main web site... make it related to the 2d code that was just clicked.
  • Remember that mobile devices are typically used by people on the go... get to the point!
